Nine Tips and Suggestions on Decorating with Glass

They say you can work wonders with smoke and mirrors, but with windows, glass art and mirrors you can magically change a house into a home . . . a beautiful home. Here are nine suggestions on decorating with glass:

1. Colors are very important and colors start with what you see out your windows, the light that streams in from them and your window treatment and curtain/drapes. Think of the colors outside as an extension of your interior. For example if you have blooming pink Rhododendrons outside your window, you could pick the blooms and put them in a nice glass vase to reflect off either a mirror or the window glass to add more dimension as well as color.

2. Layering adds warmth. For example, an antique red Navajo rug draped across a beige couch, will not only draw the eye to the setting, but makes the room appear more pleasant. This is doubly true with glass tabletops. A layer of a cloth, with not only add the warmth of the material, but will also offer extra layers of images as it reflects on the glass tops.

3. Never forget that light is color. Adding lights especially spots can bring out color highlights of artwork and other decorative elements in a room. Lighting can also be used to break up a huge room into positive and negative spaces and by doing the same with a smaller room, make it seem larger.

4. If you have small collections of dolls, world coins, or even just current stamps, setting them on a mirror and adding a little light gives them weight and importance. They will draw the eye.

5. Make a statement. A glass encased object d’art shouts “Look at me.”

6. Let people know what you are proud of. Take digital photos of your favorite places and art pieces around the home. You can even use photos of the same exterior landscape elements from different seasons. Place the photos in a digital picture frame. Many of these will constantly replay your photos. It’s like adding a new window to your home . . . but showing only what you want to show.

7. Consider flickering battery-operated candles. You can buy them at Dollar Stores. You can turn them on and off. Turn one on and put it in the bottom of a beautiful glass vase or colored stemware and it will glow . . . and there will be no scent or smoke to annoy you, your pets, or your guests.

8. Glass art has so many uses. Not only is it nice to look at, but with creative use of lighting, you can transfer the colors of the glass art to nearby walls, adding depth and layers of interest to your rooms.

9. The landscape outside your windows doesn’t have to end with just plants, trees, and lawns. Glass globes, glass mosaics, and other glass art placed outside can catch the sun and add more color and depth to your landscape outside and improve the view of inside as well.
